Japanese chain starts energy efficiency employee incentive program

Japanese retail chain Seven & i has started a new program that gives its employees an incentive for reducing their home energy consumption, the Daily Yomiuri reports.

Employees who want to participate must submit copies of their electric bills for August, September and October. If they have reduced power consumption by 15 percent compared with the same time period last year, they will earn a card worth 3,000 points in the Nananco electronic money system, according to the paper. Workers who achieve 20 percent savings will a 10,000 point reward.

The program, which the paper reports will officially launch next month, covers more than 100,000 Seven & i employees that work at any of the 45 businesses that the company owns. Seven & i anticipates that roughly 1,300 employees will receive rewards through the program.

The retail chain has also taken the lead in promoting energy efficiency at work. The company recently announced it was installing solar panels at some of its locations as part of a trial program to gauge the potential cost-savings of adopting solar power across the chain.
