Safety reward programs gaining popularity overseas, at home

Msheireb Properties, a real estate company and subsidiary of the Qatar Foundation that was established to improve the overall quality of life in urban living, recently announced the implementation of a “Safety First” campaign to improve the overall safety of construction workers at the Msheireb project.

Safety reward programs are a popular and useful asset to many companies because the practice promotes employee health and well-being while working to reduce employers’ rising healthcare costs.

“As a socially responsible organisation, our new ‘Safety First’ campaign reinforces Msheireb’s commitment towards all its workers on construction sites,” said Eng. Mohammad Al Marri, projects director at Masheireb Properties. “Msheireb Properties firmly believes that the labour force has a major role in driving forward development targets, and actively contributes to all achievements up to date.”

Workers and contractors will benefit from the rewards offered by the safety program. The collective achievements award will be given to workers who achieve pre-determined accomplishments in “Loss Time Injuries.”

The Individual Achievement Award will go to the worker who exemplifies the strictest adherence to the newly implemented safety instructions with prizes including movie tickets, phone cards, gift cards, and various household items.

“It is vital that we instill in our workers the importance of adhering to safety rules and regulations so that they operate in the safest possible environment,” Al Marri said. “The program will also lead to minimizing injuries onsite and help maintain our workers’ excellent safety record to date.”

Safety reward programs are also gaining popularity in the U.S. with the Utah Safety Council’s Awards Program, in conjunction with the Utah Safety Council Annual Meeting, naming 80 organizations in the state that practice safety in the workplace.

The recognition program is the largest in the state includes the Award of Honor, the Award of Merit, the Perfect Record Award, the Utah Labor Commission’s Arches Award, the Utah Safety Council’s Occupation Protection Award, the Individual Achievement in Safety Award, the Achievement in Safety by an Organization Award and the Professional Driver of the Year Award.

Organizations that qualify for recognition demonstrate improvements in lost time and incidence rates that are below the average for their industry on the national average as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
