Companies Doing Good – Tom’s of Maine

Here at Loyaltyworks we do our best to make a positive impact in our community and on the world around us by donating money and time to worthy causes and charities. We also believe that our employee, customer and business reward programs make the world a happier place by making business more enjoyable to do through the use of rewards and recognition.

While we do what we can to make an impact, there are businesses out there whose entire business model is doing good for the world through practices, charity, or philosophy. Companies who do good because that’s who they are deserve recognition, and since we’re a recognition company, we thought we’d show them some love.

The first company is Tom’s of Maine, in business since 1970. One of Tom’s of Maine’s main philosophies is that businesses can be sustainable and profitable all at the same time, while also making a positive impact on the environment and the world around them. All of their personal care products feature only natural ingredients and don’t have many of the harmful chemicals their competitors use. They use only environmentally friendly, sustainable ingredients, and do not test their products on animals. Ever.

Their care for responsible business doesn’t stop with their products and their ingredients. Even their buildings are environmentally sound. Since 2006:

  • 100% of the electricity they’ve used at their facility has been offset by investing in wind energy credits
  • All of their lighting is managed through sensor-controlled energy-saving fixtures (which save 250,000 kilowatt hours of energy annually)
  • They recycle everything, including toothpaste tubes, cardboard, folding cartons, mixed paper, and even shrink wrap
  • They’re members of the EPA Green Power Partnership
  • Their Kennebunk offices are powered partially by hydroelectricity.
  • They’re even partnering with recycling leader TerraCycle to champion the recycling of personal and oral care packaging at all companies, not jut their own.

They even embrace the same love for their employees that we do here at Loyaltyworks. They ensure their employees have a stable and healthy work-life balance and that they have the time they need to take care of their lives and their community interests. They encourage all of their employees to use 5% of their paid work time to volunteer in the community. They have an employee wellness program that provides employees with access to Tom’s of Maine’s wellness centers. Employees not located near the wellness centers/gyms are given a $300 benefit per year to use towards personal wellness. They give new mothers up to four weeks of paid maternity leave. To further their conservation and sustainability efforts, all employees receive a $4000 benefit if they purchase a new hybrid vehicle. These perks are on top of all the other standard employment benefits.
